(yooz' zuh) Personal name meaning, “He is strong.” 1. One of the drivers of the cart carrying the ark of the covenant when David began moving it from the house of Abinadab in Gibeah to Jerusalem (2 Samuel 6:3 ). When the ark started to slip from the cart, Uzzah put out his hand to steady it, and God struck him dead for touching the holy object (2 Samuel 6:6-7 ). 2 . Ancestor of exiles who returned to Jerusalem from Babylon (Ezra 2:49 ). 3 . Name of garden in which kings Manasseh and Ammon were buried. This distinguished them from other kings who “slept with their fathers,” that is, were buried in the royal tomb. Uzzah may have been a noble who owned the garden burial plot or may have been a variant spelling of the Canaanite god Attar-melek. 4. Member of tribe of Benjamin (1 Chronicles 8:7 ). 5 . Family of Temple servants who returned from Exile with Zerubbabel (Ezra 2:49 ). 6 . A Levite (1 Chronicles 6:29 ).
