Consistency. It is the one commodity that so many desire yet so many lack. Consistency in golf means the difference between making millions of dollars playing the game and, well, preaching for a living. Every time I hit a perfect drive down the middle of the fairway I think, "Why can't I do that every time?" If I could, that would be consistency. But I can't.

Consistency in the workplace is important, also. It creates a work environment that is, uh, consistent. Clean work stations, a constant temperature maintained, predictable work flow, a schedule; these all go together to provide consistency in the workplace. When one person violates the consistency seemingly all suffer. Especially if the one person is a boss or group leader or foreman.

However, consistency in life is absolutely demanded. Without personal consistency we erode retlationships, frustrate family members and generally are miserable. Being the same day in and day out helps us to appreciate life even when that life is not the best in the world. An acquaintence of mine had an accident several years ago which left him without the use of his legs. He gets up every morning after praying every night for his legs to be back. When his legs are still useless he eases into his wheelchair and goes about his business with consistency.

There is one place where consistency is absolutely the norm. In Christ. "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever." Hebrews 13:8 That is consistency and it is to which we have been called. We are not called to Christianity, we are called to Christ. That means that, regardless of how we were before, we are different in Him.

There can be no such thing as a moody Christian. Why? Because, "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new." 2 Corinthians 5:17 Your mood swings are not consistent with new life in Christ. Vacillating is not allowed in Christ. Wavering on righteousness is not a part of His plan. Consistency. Just like Christ.
