Chip Shots from the Ruff of Life
Thursday evening, as I rushed through the house, I turned the TV on to check the action at the Memorial Golf Tournament. The Memorial is one of my favorite tournaments. It was begun by Jack Nicklaus on the Muirfield Village Golf Course in Dublin, Ohio just outside his home town of Columbus. I have had the privilege to not only attend the tournament in years past but also to cover it for a local newspaper in Bellville, Ohio while we were living there.
When the TV came on with the tournament I could here a noisy hum. I thought to myself, "ESPN must be using some of their old stuff without the good noise filters." Then I saw a closeup of one of the golfers and there, perched on his shoulder, was the reason for the hum in the sound of the coverage. A cicada. There must have been millions of the little vagrants inhabiting the trees of Muirfield Village.
I caught some of the coverage over the next three days as well. Each time the same hum was persistent. Sometimes the hum was more intense depending on the proximity of the microphones to the trees. The crazy thing about the cicadas is that they won't be here that long. They will soon be gone. Compared to the myriads of problems which haunt we humans daily, the cicadas are a nuisance that disappears.
Their brief interlude into our lives is much like our own brief interlude of life into the millennia of the earth's existence. The cicadas, while they are here, do nothing wrong other than let us know they are here. So what about us? "For what is your life? It is even a vapour that appears for a little time and then vanishes away." James 4:14 But what do we do with that interlude of life?
"Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin." James 4:17 We need to make as much noise for the Lord as we possibly can while we are here. We need to do the good that He gives us to do. It might seem like an incessant hum to the world, but those who receive our good works will glorify God with their lives, while we avoid the sin of doing nothing.
