Golfers like to be able to enjoy playing the game. Many times we will choose courses that play to our strengths or, as in my case, lack of them. Such as a golfer who has trouble putting the ball in the fairway from the tee will look for a golf course that, though it has rough, is wide open with little or no trees and no out-of-bounds. We like it as easy as we can get it.

Every now and then I personally like to see just how good I am. That is when I try to find a course that magnifies my weaknesses. It is on such courses that I begin to wonder if anyone can ever truly play a decent round of golf on them. Then I remember that the courses the pros play are much tougher than what I face and I realize that it just takes pateince and practice.

Imagine the frustration of the professional golfers who, upon hearing about its opening, decided to try The Dragon at Gold Mountain fifty miles northwest of Reno, Nevada. The golf course is one of the most breathtaking in the United States with postcard-like scenery able to be seen from each tee box. As beautiful as it is, it is even more difficult. Even though professional golfers played more than one thousand rounds on it in its first three years of operation, only three shot par and only one beat it with a course record one under 71.

News like this makes a course undesirable to play by the ham-and-eggers like me. If it's so difficult the pros can't play it, where does that leave me? I like the challenge of living a Godly life more. No two lives are lived exactly the same although we all face basically the same temptations. "Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us." Hebrews 12:1

That "great cloud of witnesses" is what thrills me. They are the saints of old. They're not gathered around to watch us. Their lives, briefly chronicled in Hebrews 11, are an open testimony that life in God's hands is a possibility. No matter how difficult it might seem, being in God's hands can be done. How? By "looking unto Jesus" Hebrews 12:2
