Chip Shots from the Ruff of Life
Many things can strike comedians as being funny. The way someone eats a bagel, the look on a schoolboy's face during recess or the hemline of a dress on a beautiful woman can catch their eye and they're off to the races to describe it in a way that tickles somebody else's funny bone. Some of their routines have become almost iconoclastic, assuming a place in the comedic lore of a generation.
Golf has taken its share of shots from the great comedians. From George Burns to Bob Hope to Johnny Carson, at one time or another they have all taken their best shots at the grand old game of golf. David Letterman pointed out a singular truth following Mike Weir's victory at the Masters Tournament in 2003. (the Masters is being contended right now, thus the reference)
On his late night talk show Letterman has a habit of putting up Top Ten lists. They are his contribution to the lore of comedy. One such list was the "Top Ten Messages Left on Mike Weir's Answering Machine." One was, "This is the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame. Want to be our first member?" Only the most astute golf afficionado could name five golfers from Canada who have left their mark on the game, and I'm not one of them.
If you were to say name five great golfers from America, Great Britain or even South Africa, most people would at least be able to mumble two or three from each place. How about this, name five people whom you believe truly live each day walking for the Lord Jesus Christ? The writer of Hebrews had his "Faith Hall of Fame," do you have a modern one? Our problem is, for such a list, we see perfection as the criteria. Funny thing. The writer of Hebrews only had one hero that could be called "perfect" and that was Enoch who never saw death. All the rest had flaws.
The point is not how perfect we are. The point is how perfect God is. In the final analysis, it is not our greatness that counts; not our perfection that wins out. "And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us." Hebrews 11:40 In God's eyes perfection is the completeness He can give us, not the lifestyle we get right. Focus on being complete in God and he will make you complete.
