Make you a new heart, and a new spirit, Ezekiel 18:31. See also, 2 Corinthians 5:17-21.
Many are converted, but not entirely to Christ, and from their own righteousness, so as to be truly sensible of their wickedness and abomination, and earnestly to tide to Christ for reconciliation and righteousness. They therefore never get their hearts changed, but continue on in their mere outward moral state, year after year.
O Lord, let me daily receive a word from thee, to nourish and strengthen my soul, so as to be renewed daily by it more and more.
Not all the outward forms on earth,
Nor rites that God has given,
Nor will of man, nor blood, nor birth,
Can raise a soul to heaven.
The sovereign will of God, alone,
Creates us heirs of grace,
Born in the image of his son,
A new, peculiar race.
The Spirit, like some heavenly wind,
Blows on the sons of flesh,
New models all the carnal mind.
And forms the man afresh.
Our quickened souls awake and rise
From the long sleep of death;
On heavenly things we fix our eyes,
And praise employs our breath.
