Psalms 124:1-8; ; Psalms 125:1-5

Psalms 120:1-7; Psalms 121:1-8; Psalms 122:1-9; Psalms 123:1-4 described the people suffering under oppression. Psalms 124:1-8; Psalms 125:1-5 show us their deliverance. The faithful are pleased to repeat that it was only due to the LORD’s intervention. Without it, they would have been swallowed up (v. 3), overwhelmed (vv. 4, 5) and devoured (v. 6). But if God is "for us" what could those do who rise up "against us"? (v. 2; Romans 8:31). The Lord is able to rescue His people from the terrible snare of the fowlers (v. 7). The fowlers correspond prophetically with the Antichrist and the Assyrian, who are agents of Satan against the remnant of Israel. For us, they are a reminder of the enemies of our souls. If we put our faith in Christ He will help us to escape from their net, that is to say from "the sin which doth so easily beset us" (Hebrews 12:1; Psalms 91:3).

It is just this faith which is the main theme of Psalms 125:1-5 — faith in the One who is able to keep us from falling (Judges 1:24). By relying on the Lord for support we shall not be moved (v. 1 JND trans.). However, if we are to walk properly it is not enough to have strong feet. Our path needs to be straight. Let us not follow those who "turn aside unto their crooked ways" (v. 5). Let us not forget also that before setting off on our walk we need upright hearts (v. 4).
