Chip Shots from the Ruff of Life
Every morning I get up and shower in the upstairs bathroom right next to my office. Both of our bathrooms have rather large mirrors in them; something around 40 inches high by 60 inches long. They have no mounting frame surrounding them. They are mounted on a wall. How they are mounted is what is fascinating. During the day the evidence of how they are mounted is well hidden. But after a shower is a totally different story.
The first time I showered in our new house I noticed the two little patterns that appeared in the mirror. Two little squares were outlined; one about three-fourths of the way up the mirror and the other about a third of the way up. The condensation of the moisture on the mirror caused the apparitions. The temperature of the mirror at those two points is different from the rest of the mirror so they become two clearly defined areas. What they reveal are the adhesive mounting squares holding the center of the mirror in place on the wall.
The remainder of the squares are under the perimeter of the mirror which is framed by two-inch wide sections of beveled mirror, therefore, they never get seen. Many things in the average household are held by brackets which go unseen and to children seem like magic. Bathrooms are full of them. From light fixtures to towel racks, hidden brackets are plenteous.
What holds our lives together? A small three-quarter inch square of adhesive rubber cannot hold a mirror by itself, but enough of them and the mirror stays put. A simple set screw barely three-sixteenths of an inch thick keeps a towel rack in place while people stuff towels into it and jerk towels from it. What holds us together while we are being pulled from all directions?
"The eternal God is your refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms." Deuteronomy 33:27 We don't see Him. We can't physically introduce Him to our friends. We can't draw a picture of Him that we know is correct. But when the heat is up, when stress is applied, when we are being pulled from a million directions, He is there. Unseen yet understood. Undectable by others yet fully known by us. We are held together by the everlasting arms of God embracing us.
