"So they hanged Haman on the gallows he had prepared for Mordecai." (v. 10)

For Reading and Meditation:
     Esther 7:3-10

As Esther pleads her case and intercedes most powerfully for the lives of her people, the king is deeply moved. He is not aware at this time of Haman's plan to annihilate the Jews, presumably because Haman has taken great care to draw up the new law in general rather than specific terms. So he asks: "Who is he? Where is the man who has dared to do such a thing?" Esther answers: "The adversary and enemy is this vile Haman" (vv. 5-6). The king is so angry at this discovery that he goes out into the garden to reflect on the situation. While he is there, Haman throws himself at Queen Esther's feet in order to plead for his life. Esther is reclining on the couch, and when the king returns and sees Haman crouching at her feet he assumes that he is attempting to seduce his wife and orders his immediate death. One of the king's chamberlains, hearing this, suggests that Haman be put to death. Who can feel sorry that Haman had the tables turned on him? He died that day on the very gallows that he had constructed for Mordecai. Let this thought enter your soul right now, and carry it with you through the rest of your days on earth - God may permit the devil to push us right to the edge of disaster, but He will not allow him to push us over. When we are linked to God and His purposes then we may have some very frightening moments, but these ought only to intensify our intercessions and deepen our trust. In the Christ-linked life everything that happens works toward divine ends.

O Father, I am so thankful for the way the truths of Your Word feed my spirit. Day by day I can feel them penetrating to the core of my being. Nothing is purposeless and nothing can work against You. Blessed be Your wonderful Name. Amen.
