Special messengers in the East, sent on occasions of importance, when they rode swiftly, and in many cases with fresh horses or dromedaries awaiting them at convenient distances, Esther 8:10-14 . Job says, "My days are swifter than a post," Job 9:25 . Footrunners were also employed, 2 Samuel 18:22-27; and experienced runners will tire down and outrun a horse on long journeys. See FOOTMEN.
