Revelry
Holman Bible Dictionary
Noisy partying or merrymaking. English translations vary greatly in use of revel and its cognates (revelers, reveling, revelry). KJV used “revellings” but twice, as a work of the flesh (Galatians 5:21 ) and as behavior associated with Gentiles (1 Peter 4:3 ). RSV used revelry once, as a characterization of the behavior of the rich of Samaria (Amos 6:7 ). NAS and NIV used cognates of revel more often (four and eleven times, respectively). In their use revel often means little more than rejoice or exult. Of special interest is the association of revelry and idolatry ( Exodus 32:6; 1 Corinthians 10:7 ).
