Shimron
Holman Bible Dictionary
(sshihm' rahn) Personal and place name probably meaning, “protection.” 1. Son of Issachar and original ancestor of clan in that tribe (Genesis 46:13 ). 2 . Canaanite city-state which joined Hazor's northern coalition against Joshua and met defeat (Joshua 11:1 ). Some commentators think the original name was Shimon and identify it with modern khirbet Sammuniyeh five miles west of Nazareth in the Esdraelon Valley. Others have suggested Marun er-Ras ten miles northwest of modern Safed above the Sea of Chinnereth, that is the Sea of Galilee. It was allotted to the tribe of Zebulun (Joshua 19:15 ).
