1910 New Catholic Dictionary

(Middle English: Bristowe, place at the bridge)

English diocese founded by Henry VIII, 1542, refounded by Cardinal Pole, 1554. The sole Catholic incumbent was the Benedictine, John Holyman (1554-1558), succeeded by an Anglican under Elizabeth. The cathedral has a 14th-century chancel and 15th-century transepts.
