A large and important tribe of Algonquian stock, numbering about 30,000, divided between the United States and Canada, with habitat in Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, part of North Dakota, and the northern shores of Lakes Huron and Superior. The first missionary, 1600, was the Jesuit Father Menard. Other missionaries were: Father Allouez, Bishop Baraga, Father Belcourt, and Father Verwyst. The Christian portion of the tribe is largely Catholic.
