Salmanasar

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

(Assyrian: the god Shulman is the leader)

Name of four Assyrian kings, one of whom deserves special mention. Salmanasar IV (726-722 B.C.), waged war against the King of Israel, Osee, for refusing tribute, and besieged Samaria for three years; but it was his successor Sargon who took the country in 721 (4Kings 17). This marks the end of the Kingdom of Israel and the beginning of the Assyrian captivity.
