(v. t.) To extenuate; to palliate.

(v. t.) To lighten or lessen the force or weight of.

(v. t.) To lighten or lessen (physical or mental troubles); to mitigate, or make easier to be endured; as, to alleviate sorrow, pain, care, etc.; - opposed to aggravate.
