Characters, not properly abbreviations, are used in the same way; e.g. ° ' " for "degrees, minutes, seconds " (circular measure); 3, for "ounces, drachms, scruples." 3 is probably to be traced to the written form of the z in "oz." 3 These forms (as well as $, the symbol for the American dollar) are placed before their amounts.
