CALVERT VAUX (1824-1895), American architect and landscape gardener, was born in London on the 24th of December 1824. He was educated at Merchant Taylors' School and in the office of Lewis N. Cottingham (1787-1847). In 1850 he went to America and became A. J. Downing's architectural partner. In 1856 and 1866 Vaux was associated with F. L. Olmsted in the plans for the improvement of various parks. He designed the Belvidere in Central Park, New York, and built a number of country houses in Newport, besides many town houses and public institutions.
