1911 Encyclopedia Britannica

(probably of Celtic origin, and connected with the root ceu or cau, hollow; cf. Welsh ceubol, a ferry-boat), a flatbottomed fishing-boat, with deep-lying rudder and lug-sail, used off the north-east coast of England.
