Plumbago

1911 Encyclopedia Britannica

(from Lat. plumbum, lead), a name frequently applied to graphite, in allusion to its remote resemblance to lead, whence it is popularly called "black-lead." It was formerly held in repute in medicine, but is now regarded as having no medicinal properties of any value.
