Sombrero

1911 Encyclopedia Britannica

a wide-brimmed hat, made of felt, largely worn throughout South and Central America, but originating in Spain. The Spanish word is derived from sombra, shade, generally taken to be from Lat. sub umbra, beneath the shade; but the etymology, like that of "sombre," dark, gloomy, has been disputed.
