1911 Encyclopedia Britannica

(from Gr. arev6s, close, narrow, and -ypb4 Etv, to write), the system or art of writing by signs representing single sounds or groups of sounds, single words or groups of words, sometimes also styled "brachygraphy" (Gr. (3paxus, short); it is a general term including all the various systems of shorthand writing (see Shorthand).
