a Spanish prelate, born at Chuquisaca, in Bolivia; became a Franciscan, and was appointed, in 1643, bishop of Assumption, in Paraguay. He had violent disputes with the Jesuits, whom he suspected of a design to withdraw the country from the king of Spain, and his example animated other prelates, especially Palafox, to resist the Jesuits. In 1666 he was removed. to the see of Santa-Cruz de la Sierra, where he shortly after. died. He wrote, Manual y Relacion de las Cosas de Piru (Madrid, 1634, 4to); and Historia Indiana et Indigenarum.
