Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

[many El'paal] (Hebrews Elpa'al, אֶלְפִּ ל, in pause אֶלְפָּ ל, God is his wages; Sept. Ἀλφαάλ and Ε᾿λφαάλ ), the second named of the two sons of Shaharaim (a descendant of Benjamin residing in the region of Moab) by his wife Hushim, and progenitor of a numerous posterity (1 Chronicles 8:11-12; 1 Chronicles 8:18). B.C. cir. 1618. The Bene-Elpaal appear to have lived in the neighborhood of Lydda (Lod), and on the outposts of the Benjamite hills as far as Ajalon (8:12-18), near the Danite frontier.
