a Congregational minister and distinguished educator, was born in Charlestown, N.H., June 3, 1801. He graduated at Dartmouth College in 1828, and at Andover Theological Seminary in 1831; was ordained at Bradford, Massachusetts, September 26 of the same year, and for a time was a home missionary in Tennessee. From 1832 to 1837 he was professor of ancient languages, and president of Jackson College; for the next three years secretary of the Central American Educational Society. He was called to the presidency of Middlebury College, Vermont, in 1840, and remained in office twenty-six years. From 1867 to 1869 he resided in Hyde Park, Mass., preaching for a part of this time at South Weymouth. His residence thereafter was in West Roxbury (1870-75), Charlestown, N.H., and Walpole from 1880 till his death, Nov. 15,1883.
