Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
a movable candlestick of brass, latten, or other metal, sometimes affixed to a wall, placed against a pillar, or let into the rail-moulding of a pew. Sconces were likewise arranged along the top both of the roodscreen and of the side-screens of choirs and lateral chapels, in which, on great festivals, such as Christmas and Candlemas, lighted tapers were placed. — Lee, Gloss. of Liturg. and Eccles.
