French Christian publicist and historian; born at Marseilles 1802; died at Paris Dec. 23, 1872. Among many historical works, Capefigue wrote a history of the Jews, entitled "Histoire Philosophique des Juifs Depuis la Décadence des Macchabées Jusqu'à Nos Jours," Paris, 1833. The author divided Jewish history into three periods, of which only the first, extending from the decadence of the Maccabees to the sixth century, is dealt with in the volume that has been published.
