Acrabate´ne, a district in that portion of Judea which lies towards the south end of the Dead Sea, occupied by the Edomites during the Captivity, and afterwards known as Idumaea. It is mentioned in 1 Maccabees 5:3; Joseph. Antiq. xii. 8, 1. It is assumed to have taken its name from the Maaleh Akrabbim, or Steep of the Scorpions, mentioned in Numbers 34:4, and Joshua 15:3, as the southern extremity of the tribe of Judah [AKRABBIM]. Another district of the same name is mentioned by Josephus as extending between Shechem and Jericho, but it is not mentioned in Scripture.
