Gesenius Hebrew Grammer

Part 162

§162. Disjunctive Sentences.

The introduction of another possible case, excluding that which preceded, is effected by אוֹ‎ or, e.g. Exodus 21:36, equivalent to the Latin vel; but also equivalent to aut with an exclusive antithesis, 2 Kings 2:16; so Isaiah 27:5 אוֹ‎= it would then happen that, for which elsewhere אוֹ כִי‎.

In the sense of sive—sive we find אוֹ‎אוֹ‎, or אִם‎אִם‎, or וְאִם‎אִם‎ (see the examples in the Lexicon), also וְ‎וְ‎ Leviticus 5:3, Numbers 9:14, Deuteronomy 24:7, Isaiah 2:13 ff., Jeremiah 32:20, Psalms 76:7, Job 34:29, perhaps also Exodus 21:16 (but not Proverbs 29:9; cf. Delitzsch on the passage), and לְ‎לְ‎ (see §143e); cf. also גַּם‎גַּם‎ (in Genesis 24:44 וְגַם‎גַּם‎) both—and; but גַּם לֹא‎גַּם לֹא‎ (in Genesis 21:26 וְגַם לֹא‎וְגַם לֹא‎; Zephaniah 1:18 גַּם ... לֹא‎גַּם‎) neither—nor. On disjunctive questions, see §150g.
