I setting, mostly in pl., ἀελίου δ. S. OC 1245, cf. A. Fr. 69, Hp. Epid. 7.5, Pl. Phd. 61e; ἐπὶ δυσμῇσιν ἐών at the point of setting, Hdt. 3.104; περὶ ἡλίου δυσμάς Lys. 1.39; ἥλιος ἦν ἤδη περὶ δυσμάς Hell.Oxy. 15.5: metaph., τὸ γῆρας δυσμαὶ βίου Arist. Po. 1457b25, cf. D.H. 4.79, Ph. 1.678, S.E. M. 9.90, Diog.Oen. 2, etc.
II the quarter of sunset, west, ἀπὸ ἑσπέρης τε καὶ [ἡλίου] δυσμέων Hdt. 2.31; πρὸς ἡλίου δυσμέων Id. 7.115, cf. 2.33; πρὸς δυσμαῖς A. Pers. 232; opp. ἀνατολαί, BGU 1049.8 (iv A. D.): — also δυθμή, Call. Cer. 10 (pl.), Fr. 539 (sg.).
δυσμή, δυσμης, ἡ (from Aeschylus and Herodotus down), much more often in plural (Winer's Grammar, § 27, 3) δυσμαι, αἱ (δύω or δύνω, which see), namely, ἡλίου, the setting of the sun: Luke 12:54 (according to the reading of T WH Tr marginal reading ἐπί δυσμή may possibly be understood of time (cf. Winers Grammar, 375f (352)); see ἐπί, A. II.; others take the preposition locally, over, in, and give δυσμή the meaning which follows; see ἐπί, A. I. 1 b.); the region of sunset, the west, (anarthrous, Winer's Grammar, 121 (115)): Revelation 21:13; ἀπό ἀνατολῶν καί δυσμῶν, from all regions or nations, Matthew 8:11; Matthew 24:27; Luke 13:29; in Hebrew הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ מְבוא, Joshua 1:4. Often in secular writings from Herodotus on, both with and without ἡλίου.

In P Thead 54.15 (A.D. 299) and BGU IV. 1049.8 (A.D. 342) we find ἀπὸ μὲν ἀνατολῶν and ἀπὸ δὲ δυσμῶν contrasted : cf. Matthew 8:11 etc. Syll 552.70 (late ii/B.C.) εἰς τὴν παραστάδα τὴν ἀπὸ δυσμῆς τῆς στοᾶς τῆς βορεί [ας shows the sing., as does Chrest. I. 341.88 (reign of Hadrian) ἀρχό (μενον) ἀπὸ δυσ (μῆς) τῆς κώμης, as printed; but Wilcken remarks ";oder δύσ (εως),"; and presumably δυσ (μῶν) is equally possible. For another prepositional combination see P Leid-Wi. 5 (ii/iii A.D.) πρὸς δυσμὰς βλέπουσα, of a door.
