Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

עֲנַמֶּלֶךְ [Anammelech], pr.n. of the idol of the Sepharvites; it occurs once, 2 Kings 17:31. The word appears to be blended of ענם = صنم an image, a statue, and מֶלֶךְ a king; or, as was supposed by Hyde (De Rel. Vett. Persarum, p. 131), from غنم cattle, and מֶלֶךְ; hence, the flock of stars, i.e. the constellation Cepheus, which is called by the Orientals كواكب الفر ق the stars of the flock, and الر اعى والغنم the shepherd and flock. The former part of this word is found also in the name Ἐνεμεσσάρ (Tob_1:2, 13, 15, 16 ).
