ἀνάπαυσις, ἀναπαύσεως, ἡ (ἀναπαύω) (from Mimnermus, Pindar down);

1. intermission, cessation, of any motion, business, labor: ἀνάπαυσιν οὐκ ἔχουσι λέγοντες (Rec. λέγοντα) equivalent to οὐκ ἀναπαυονται λέγοντες they incessantly say, Revelation 4:8.

2. rest, recreation: Matthew 12:43; Luke 11:24; Revelation 14:11 (and often in Greek writings); blessed tranquillity of soul Matthew 11:29 (Sir. 6:(), ; ; Wis. 4:7). (The word denotes a temporary rest, a respite, e. g. of soldiers; cf. Schmidt, chapter 25; Lightfoot on Philemon 1:7; Trench, § xli.)

SYN.: ἄνεσις G425 (lit, the relaxation of the strings of a lyre), prop. signifies the rest or ease which comes from the relaxation of unfavourable conditions, as, e.g. affliction: ἀνάπ , the rest which comes from the temporary cessation of labour (v. Tr., Stn., § xl; Cremer, 827; MM, VGT, s.v.).

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

In P Flor I. 57.56 (A.D. 223–5) a septuagenarian pleads for ";relief"; (ἀναπαύσεω ̣̓) from public duties (λειτουργίαι); and in BGU I. 180.5 (ii/iii A.D.) we read of the πεντ [α ]ετῆ χρό [ν ]ον ἀνα [παύσε ]ως accorded to veterans μετὰ τ [ὴν ἀπό ]λυσιν from military service. As will be seen from the record of the verb below, the essential idea is that of a respite, or temporary rest as a preparation for future toil, which Lightfoot (on Philemon 1:7) finds in ἀναπαύω. This brings out all the better the differentia of κατάπαυσις in Hebrews 4:1-16, the Sabbath followed by no weekday.
