Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

דַּעַת inf. f. used of a noun, from the verb יָדַע (like דֵּעַ and דֵּעָה)

(1) knowledge, knowing, sometimes followed by an acc. Jeremiah 22:16, הַדַּעַת אֹתִי knowing me, the knowledge of me; דַּעַת אֱלֹהִים, Hosea 4:1, 6:6, and κατʼ ἐξοχὴν, הַדַּעַת Hosea 4:6, knowledge (of God). בִּבְלִי דַעַת through ignorance, unawares (opp. to “of set purpose, advisedly”), Deuteronomy 4:42, 19:4 Joshua 20:3. מִבְּלִי דַעַת Isaiah 5:13, is not “unexpectedly, suddenly” (the interpretation which I defended in my commentary on this passage); but by comparison with Hosea 4:6 (where once there is מִבְּלִי הַדַּעַת); “for want of the knowledge of God,” i.e. of religion. Rightly therefore rendered by LXX. διὰ τὸ μὴ εἰδέναι αὐτοὺς τὸν Κύριον. Deuteronomy 4:42, 19:4 Joshua 20:3.

(2) intelligence, understanding, wisdom, i.q. חָכְמָה, תְּבוּנָה Proverbs 1:4, 2:6 24:5, etc. בִּבְלִי דַעַת foolishly, Job 35:16, 36:12 38:2 42:3. יָדַע דַּעַת to be possessed of wisdom, Proverbs 17:27.
