Songs suffer at the mercy of the performer.

The songs are about things that we were thinking and we wrote 'em down, and when you listen to 'em, whatever you think it's about... THAT'S what it's about!

Our perception of songs that we've written... the meaning changes from day to day... to whatever stage we're at in our life and careers.

There's no huge, deep message in any of the songs. We recorded a few months of being human.

I have two lovely sons and some good memories, but I've had a rather tumultuous personal life. It hasn't been dull; I've been the Hiroshima of love.

I just hope it grows into where it was before because I want my son to see it. I want him to have a positive memory of it going forward, so he can be proud of his daddy.

Sometimes, I write '60s or '80s style pop songs.

Instead of slashing my wrists, I just write a bunch of really crummy songs.

Finding fresh song topics can sometimes be quite difficult.

I stay way from that area, and there's only so many songs you can write about love, sex and death.

I don't mean this in a stuck-up way, but I needed an attitude song.

Writing songs is super intimate. It's a bit like getting naked.

It's not like the original movie where you thought it was the mother committing the murders, but it was actually the son. I don't think it's possible to create the kind of shock today that we created in 1959. And I don't even want to try.

It is funny the two things most men are proudest of is the thing that any man can do and doing does in the same way, that is being drunk and being the father of their son.

We've begun to raise daughters more like sons... but few have the courage to raise our sons more like our daughters.

Son, we'd like to keep you around this season but we're going to try and win a pennant.

Saying you have a political solution is like saying you can write a pop song that's going to stay at the top of the list forever. I don't have many illusions about this, but I'm not cynical about it.

The spiritual quest was always the predominant aspect of my life. It's always been there. But there's also an incredible passion connected to it; it's not just a dry investigative process. I have been extremely emotional about it, and that comes out in the songs.

Peace Train is a song I wrote, the message of which continues to breeze thunderously through the hearts of millions of human beings.
