For three hundred years we have had our focus on the individual. We have distinguished him from the objective world as the Middle Ages did not think of doing. We have given him the world and the universe as a playground for exploration and discovery.

In hard-core science fiction in which characters are responding to a change in environment, caused by nature or the universe or technology, what readers want to see is how people cope, and so the character are present to cope, or fail to cope.

My own suspicion is that the universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose.

It is my supposition that the Universe in not only queerer than we imagine, is queerer than we can imagine.
