Deuteronomy 31-32

Chapter 31

Joshua to Succeed Moses

1 Then Moses went out and spoke these words to all Israel: 2 "I am now a hundred and twenty years old(a) and I am no longer able to lead you.(b) The Lord has said to me, ‘You shall not cross the Jordan.'(c) 3 The Lord your God himself will cross(d) over ahead of you.(e) He will destroy these nations(f) before you, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua also will cross(g) over ahead of you, as the Lord said. 4 And the Lord will do to them what he did to Sihon and Og,(h) the kings of the Amorites, whom he destroyed along with their land. 5 The Lord will deliver(i) them to you, and you must do to them all that I have commanded you. 6 Be strong and courageous.(j) Do not be afraid or terrified(k) because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you;(l) he will never leave you(m) nor forsake(n) you."

7 Then Moses summoned Joshua and said(o) to him in the presence of all Israel, "Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors to give them,(p) and you must divide it among them as their inheritance. 8 The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you;(q) he will never leave you nor forsake you.(r) Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged."

Public Reading of the Law

9 So Moses wrote(s) down this law and gave it to the Levitical priests, who carried(t) the ark of the covenant of the Lord , and to all the elders of Israel. 10 Then Moses commanded them: "At the end of every seven years, in the year for canceling debts,(u) during the Festival of Tabernacles,(v) 11 when all Israel comes to appear(w) before the Lord your God at the place he will choose,(x) you shall read this law(y) before them in their hearing. 12 Assemble the people—men, women and children, and the foreigners residing in your towns—so they can listen and learn(z) to fear(aa) the Lord your God and follow carefully all the words of this law. 13 Their children,(ab) who do not know this law, must hear it and learn to fear the Lord your God as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess."

Israel's Rebellion Predicted

14 The Lord said to Moses, "Now the day of your death(ac) is near. Call Joshua(ad) and present yourselves at the tent of meeting, where I will commission him.(ae)" So Moses and Joshua came and presented themselves at the tent of meeting.(af)

15 Then the Lord appeared at the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the cloud stood over the entrance to the tent.(ag) 16 And the Lord said to Moses: "You are going to rest with your ancestors,(ah) and these people will soon prostitute(ai) themselves to the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will forsake(aj) me and break the covenant I made with them. 17 And in that day I will become angry(ak) with them and forsake(al) them; I will hide(am) my face(an) from them, and they will be destroyed. Many disasters(ao) and calamities will come on them, and in that day they will ask, ‘Have not these disasters come on us because our God is not with us?'(ap) 18 And I will certainly hide my face in that day because of all their wickedness in turning to other gods.

19 "Now write(aq) down this song and teach it to the Israelites and have them sing it, so that it may be a witness(ar) for me against them. 20 When I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey, the land I promised on oath to their ancestors,(as) and when they eat their fill and thrive, they will turn to other gods(at) and worship them,(au) rejecting me and breaking my covenant.(av) 21 And when many disasters and calamities come on them,(aw) this song will testify against them, because it will not be forgotten by their descendants. I know what they are disposed to do,(ax) even before I bring them into the land I promised them on oath." 22 So Moses wrote(ay) down this song that day and taught it to the Israelites.

23 The Lord gave this command(az) to Joshua son of Nun: "Be strong and courageous,(ba) for you will bring the Israelites into the land I promised them on oath, and I myself will be with you."

24 After Moses finished writing(bb) in a book the words of this law(bc) from beginning to end, 25 he gave this command to the Levites who carried(bd) the ark of the covenant of the Lord : 26 "Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God. There it will remain as a witness against you.(be) 27 For I know how rebellious(bf) and stiff-necked(bg) you are. If you have been rebellious against the Lord while I am still alive and with you, how much more will you rebel after I die! 28 Assemble before me all the elders of your tribes and all your officials, so that I can speak these words in their hearing and call the heavens and the earth to testify against them.(bh) 29 For I know that after my death you are sure to become utterly corrupt(bi) and to turn from the way I have commanded you. In days to come, disaster(bj) will fall on you because you will do evil in the sight of the Lord and arouse his anger by what your hands have made."

The Song of Moses

30 And Moses recited the words of this song from beginning to end in the hearing of the whole assembly of Israel:

Chapter 32

1 Listen,(a) you heavens,(b) and I will speak;
     hear, you earth, the words of my mouth.(c)
2 Let my teaching fall like rain(d)
     and my words descend like dew,(e)
like showers(f) on new grass,
     like abundant rain on tender plants.

3 I will proclaim(g) the name of the Lord .(h)
     Oh, praise the greatness(i) of our God!
4 He is the Rock,(j) his works are perfect,(k)
     and all his ways are just.
A faithful God(l) who does no wrong,
     upright(m) and just is he.(n)

5 They are corrupt and not his children;
     to their shame they are a warped and crooked generation.(o)
6 Is this the way you repay(p) the Lord ,
     you foolish(q) and unwise people?(r)
Is he not your Father,(s) your Creator,[a]
     who made you and formed you?(t)

7 Remember the days of old;(u)
     consider the generations long past.(v)
Ask your father and he will tell you,
     your elders, and they will explain to you.(w)
8 When the Most High(x) gave the nations their inheritance,
     when he divided all mankind,(y)
he set up boundaries(z) for the peoples
     according to the number of the sons of Israel.[b](aa)
9 For the Lord 's portion(ab) is his people,
     Jacob his allotted inheritance.(ac)

10 In a desert(ad) land he found him,
     in a barren and howling waste.(ae)
He shielded(af) him and cared for him;
     he guarded him as the apple of his eye,(ag)
11 like an eagle that stirs up its nest
     and hovers over its young,(ah)
that spreads its wings to catch them
     and carries them aloft.(ai)
12 The Lord alone led(aj) him;(ak)
     no foreign god was with him.(al)

13 He made him ride on the heights(am) of the land
     and fed him with the fruit of the fields.
He nourished him with honey from the rock,(an)
     and with oil(ao) from the flinty crag,
14 with curds and milk from herd and flock
     and with fattened lambs and goats,
with choice rams of Bashan(ap)
     and the finest kernels of wheat.(aq)
You drank the foaming blood of the grape.(ar)

15 Jeshurun[c](as) grew fat(at) and kicked;
     filled with food, they became heavy and sleek.
They abandoned(au) the God who made them
     and rejected the Rock(av) their Savior.
16 They made him jealous(aw) with their foreign gods
     and angered(ax) him with their detestable idols.
17 They sacrificed(ay) to false gods,(az) which are not God—
     gods they had not known,(ba)
     gods that recently appeared,(bb)
     gods your ancestors did not fear.
18 You deserted the Rock, who fathered you;
     you forgot(bc) the God who gave you birth.

19 The Lord saw this and rejected them(bd)
     because he was angered by his sons and daughters.(be)
20 "I will hide my face(bf) from them," he said,
     "and see what their end will be;
for they are a perverse generation,(bg)
     children who are unfaithful.(bh)
21 They made me jealous(bi) by what is no god
     and angered me with their worthless idols.(bj)
I will make them envious by those who are not a people;
     I will make them angry by a nation that has no understanding.(bk)
22 For a fire will be kindled by my wrath,(bl)
     one that burns down to the realm of the dead below.(bm)
It will devour(bn) the earth and its harvests(bo)
     and set afire the foundations of the mountains.(bp)

23 "I will heap calamities(bq) on them
     and spend my arrows(br) against them.
24 I will send wasting famine(bs) against them,
     consuming pestilence(bt) and deadly plague;(bu)
I will send against them the fangs of wild beasts,(bv)
     the venom of vipers(bw) that glide in the dust.(bx)
25 In the street the sword will make them childless;
     in their homes terror(by) will reign.(bz)
The young men and young women will perish,
     the infants and those with gray hair.(ca)
26 I said I would scatter(cb) them
     and erase their name from human memory,(cc)
27 but I dreaded the taunt of the enemy,
     lest the adversary misunderstand(cd)
and say, ‘Our hand has triumphed;
     the Lord has not done all this.'"(ce)

28 They are a nation without sense,
     there is no discernment(cf) in them.
29 If only they were wise and would understand this(cg)
     and discern what their end will be!(ch)
30 How could one man chase a thousand,
     or two put ten thousand to flight,(ci)
unless their Rock had sold them,(cj)
     unless the Lord had given them up?(ck)
31 For their rock is not like our Rock,(cl)
     as even our enemies concede.(cm)
32 Their vine comes from the vine of Sodom(cn)
     and from the fields of Gomorrah.
Their grapes are filled with poison,(co)
     and their clusters with bitterness.(cp)
33 Their wine is the venom of serpents,
     the deadly poison of cobras.(cq)

34 "Have I not kept this in reserve
     and sealed it in my vaults?(cr)
35 It is mine to avenge;(cs) I will repay.(ct)
     In due time their foot will slip;(cu)
their day of disaster is near
     and their doom rushes upon them.(cv)"

36 The Lord will vindicate his people(cw)
     and relent(cx) concerning his servants(cy)
when he sees their strength is gone
     and no one is left, slave(cz) or free.[d]
37 He will say: "Now where are their gods,
     the rock they took refuge in,(da)
38 the gods who ate the fat of their sacrifices
     and drank the wine of their drink offerings?(db)
Let them rise up to help you!
     Let them give you shelter!

39 "See now that I myself am he!(dc)
     There is no god besides me.(dd)
I put to death(de) and I bring to life,(df)
     I have wounded and I will heal,(dg)
     and no one can deliver out of my hand.(dh)
40 I lift my hand(di) to heaven and solemnly swear:
     As surely as I live forever,(dj)
41 when I sharpen my flashing sword(dk)
     and my hand grasps it in judgment,
I will take vengeance(dl) on my adversaries
     and repay those who hate me.(dm)
42 I will make my arrows drunk with blood,(dn)
     while my sword devours flesh:(do)
the blood of the slain and the captives,
     the heads of the enemy leaders."

43 Rejoice,(dp) you nations, with his people,[e][f]
     for he will avenge the blood of his servants;(dq)
he will take vengeance on his enemies(dr)
     and make atonement for his land and people.(ds)

44 Moses came with Joshua[g](dt) son of Nun and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people. 45 When Moses finished reciting all these words to all Israel, 46 he said to them, "Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day,(du) so that you may command(dv) your children to obey carefully all the words of this law. 47 They are not just idle words for you—they are your life.(dw) By them you will live long(dx) in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess."

Moses to Die on Mount Nebo

48 On that same day the Lord told Moses,(dy) 49 "Go up into the Abarim(dz) Range to Mount Nebo(ea) in Moab, across from Jericho,(eb) and view Canaan,(ec) the land I am giving the Israelites as their own possession. 50 There on the mountain that you have climbed you will die(ed) and be gathered to your people, just as your brother Aaron died(ee) on Mount Hor(ef) and was gathered to his people. 51 This is because both of you broke faith with me in the presence of the Israelites at the waters of Meribah Kadesh(eg) in the Desert of Zin(eh) and because you did not uphold my holiness among the Israelites.(ei) 52 Therefore, you will see the land only from a distance;(ej) you will not enter(ek) the land I am giving to the people of Israel."

Job 19

Chapter 19

Job

1 Then Job replied:

2 "How long will you torment(a) me
     and crush(b) me with words?
3 Ten times(c) now you have reproached(d) me;
     shamelessly you attack me.
4 If it is true that I have gone astray,
     my error(e) remains my concern alone.
5 If indeed you would exalt yourselves above me(f)
     and use my humiliation against me,
6 then know that God has wronged me(g)
     and drawn his net(h) around me.(i)

7 "Though I cry, ‘Violence!' I get no response;(j)
     though I call for help,(k) there is no justice.(l)
8 He has blocked my way so I cannot pass;(m)
     he has shrouded my paths in darkness.(n)
9 He has stripped(o) me of my honor(p)
     and removed the crown from my head.(q)
10 He tears me down(r) on every side till I am gone;
     he uproots my hope(s) like a tree.(t)
11 His anger(u) burns against me;
     he counts me among his enemies.(v)
12 His troops advance in force;(w)
     they build a siege ramp(x) against me
     and encamp around my tent.(y)

13 "He has alienated my family(z) from me;
     my acquaintances are completely estranged from me.(aa)
14 My relatives have gone away;
     my closest friends(ab) have forgotten me.
15 My guests(ac) and my female servants(ad) count me a foreigner;
     they look on me as on a stranger.
16 I summon my servant, but he does not answer,
     though I beg him with my own mouth.
17 My breath is offensive to my wife;
     I am loathsome(ae) to my own family.
18 Even the little boys(af) scorn me;
     when I appear, they ridicule me.(ag)
19 All my intimate friends(ah) detest me;(ai)
     those I love have turned against me.(aj)
20 I am nothing but skin and bones;(ak)
     I have escaped only by the skin of my teeth.[a]

21 "Have pity on me, my friends,(al) have pity,
     for the hand of God has struck(am) me.
22 Why do you pursue(an) me as God does?(ao)
     Will you never get enough of my flesh?(ap)

23 "Oh, that my words were recorded,
     that they were written on a scroll,(aq)
24 that they were inscribed with an iron tool(ar) on[b] lead,
     or engraved in rock forever!(as)
25 I know that my redeemer[c](at) lives,(au)
     and that in the end he will stand on the earth.[d]
26 And after my skin has been destroyed,
     yet[e] in[f] my flesh I will see God;(av)
27 I myself will see him
     with my own eyes(aw)—I, and not another.
     How my heart yearns(ax) within me!

28 "If you say, ‘How we will hound(ay) him,
     since the root of the trouble lies in him,[g]'
29 you should fear the sword yourselves;
     for wrath will bring punishment by the sword,(az)
     and then you will know that there is judgment.[h]"(ba)

Acts 7:23-8:1

Chapter 7

23 "When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit his own people, the Israelites. 24 He saw one of them being mistreated by an Egyptian, so he went to his defense and avenged him by killing the Egyptian. 25 Moses thought that his own people would realize that God was using him to rescue them, but they did not. 26 The next day Moses came upon two Israelites who were fighting. He tried to reconcile them by saying, ‘Men, you are brothers; why do you want to hurt each other?'

27 "But the man who was mistreating the other pushed Moses aside and said, ‘Who made you ruler and judge over us?(af) 28 Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?'[e] 29 When Moses heard this, he fled to Midian, where he settled as a foreigner and had two sons.(ag)

30 "After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai. 31 When he saw this, he was amazed at the sight. As he went over to get a closer look, he heard the Lord say:(ah) 32 ‘I am the God of your fathers,(ai) the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.'[f] Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look.(aj)

33 "Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.(ak) 34 I have indeed seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to set them free. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.'[g](al)

35 "This is the same Moses they had rejected with the words, ‘Who made you ruler and judge?'(am) He was sent to be their ruler and deliverer by God himself, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 He led them out of Egypt(an) and performed wonders and signs(ao) in Egypt, at the Red Sea(ap) and for forty years in the wilderness.(aq)

37 "This is the Moses who told the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your own people.'[h](ar) 38 He was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel(as) who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors;(at) and he received living words(au) to pass on to us.(av)

39 "But our ancestors refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.(aw) 40 They told Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who led us out of Egypt—we don't know what has happened to him!'[i](ax) 41 That was the time they made an idol in the form of a calf. They brought sacrifices to it and reveled in what their own hands had made.(ay) 42 But God turned away from them(az) and gave them over to the worship of the sun, moon and stars.(ba) This agrees with what is written in the book of the prophets:

"‘Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings
     forty years in the wilderness, people of Israel?
43 You have taken up the tabernacle of Molek
     and the star of your god Rephan,
     the idols you made to worship.
Therefore I will send you into exile'[j](bb) beyond Babylon.

44 "Our ancestors had the tabernacle of the covenant law(bc) with them in the wilderness. It had been made as God directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen.(bd) 45 After receiving the tabernacle, our ancestors under Joshua brought it with them when they took the land from the nations God drove out before them.(be) It remained in the land until the time of David,(bf) 46 who enjoyed God's favor and asked that he might provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.[k](bg) 47 But it was Solomon who built a house for him.(bh)

48 "However, the Most High(bi) does not live in houses made by human hands.(bj) As the prophet says:

49 "‘Heaven is my throne,
     and the earth is my footstool.(bk)
What kind of house will you build for me?
says the Lord.
     Or where will my resting place be?
50 Has not my hand made all these things?'[l](bl)

51 "You stiff-necked people!(bm) Your hearts(bn) and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit! 52 Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute?(bo) They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him(bp) 53 you who have received the law that was given through angels(bq) but have not obeyed it."

The Stoning of Stephen

54 When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious(br) and gnashed their teeth at him. 55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit,(bs) looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.(bt) 56 "Look," he said, "I see heaven open(bu) and the Son of Man(bv) standing at the right hand of God."

57 At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, 58 dragged him out of the city(bw) and began to stone him.(bx) Meanwhile, the witnesses(by) laid their coats(bz) at the feet of a young man named Saul.(ca)

59 While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."(cb) 60 Then he fell on his knees(cc) and cried out, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them."(cd) When he had said this, he fell asleep.(ce)

Chapter 8

1 And Saul(a) approved of their killing him.

The Church Persecuted and Scattered

On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered(b) throughout Judea and Samaria.(c)
