Job's Opening Speech
1 After this, Job began to speak and cursed the day he was born. 2 He said:
3 May the day I was born perish,
and the night when they said,
"A boy is conceived."(a)
4 If only that day had turned to darkness!
May God above not care about it,
or light shine on it.
5 May darkness and gloom(b) reclaim it,
and a cloud settle over it.
May an eclipse of the sun[a] terrify it.
6 If only darkness had taken that night away!
May it not appear[b] among the days of the year
or be listed in the calendar.[c]
7 Yes, may that night be barren;
may no joyful shout(c) be heard in it.
8 Let those who curse certain days
cast a spell(d) on it,
those who are skilled in rousing Leviathan.(e)
9 May its morning stars grow dark.
May it wait for daylight but have none;
may it not see the breaking[d] of dawn.
10 For that night did not shut
the doors of my mother's womb,
and hide sorrow from my eyes.
11 Why was I not stillborn;
why didn't I die as I came from the womb?(f)
12 Why did the knees receive me,
and why were there breasts for me to nurse?(g)
13 Now I would certainly be lying down in peace;
I would be asleep.(h)
Then I would be at rest(i)
14 with the kings and counselors(j) of the earth,
who rebuilt ruined cities for themselves,
15 or with princes who had gold,
who filled their houses(k) with silver.
16 Or why was I not hidden like a miscarried child,(l)
like infants who never see daylight?
17 There the wicked(m) cease to make trouble,
and there the weary find rest.
18 The captives are completely at ease;(n)
they do not hear the voice of their oppressor.(o)
19 Both small and great are there,
and the slave is set free from his master.(p)
20 Why is light given to one burdened with grief,
and life to those whose existence is bitter,(q)
21 who wait for death,(r) but it does not come,
and search for it more than for hidden treasure,
22 who are filled with much joy
and are glad when they reach the grave?(s)
23 Why is life given to a man whose path is hidden,(t)
whom God has hedged in?
24 I sigh when food(u) is put before me,[e]
and my groans pour out like water.(v)
25 For the thing I feared has overtaken me,
and what I dreaded has happened to me.(w)
26 I cannot relax or be still;
I have no rest,(x) for trouble comes.
Eliphaz Speaks
1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
2 Should anyone try to speak with you
when you are exhausted?
Yet who can keep from speaking?
3 Indeed, you have instructed many
and have strengthened(a) weak hands.
4 Your words have steadied the one who was stumbling
and braced the knees that were buckling.(b)
5 But now that this has happened to you,
you have become exhausted.
It strikes(c) you, and you are dismayed.
6 Isn't your piety your confidence,
and the integrity of your life[a] your hope?(d)
7 Consider: who has perished when he was innocent?
Where have the honest been destroyed?(e)
8 In my experience, those who plow injustice
and those who sow trouble(f) reap the same.(g)
9 They perish at a single blast(h) from God
and come to an end by the breath of His nostrils.(i)
10 The lion may roar and the fierce lion(j) growl,
but the fangs of young lions are broken.(k)
11 The strong lion dies if it catches no prey,
and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.(l)
12 A word was brought to me in secret;
my ears caught a whisper of it.(m)
13 Among unsettling thoughts from visions in the night,(n)
when deep sleep(o) descends on men,
14 fear and trembling came over me(p)
and made all my bones shake.
15 A wind[b] passed by me,
and I shuddered with fear.[c]
16 A figure stood there,
but I could not recognize its appearance;
a form loomed before my eyes.
I heard a quiet voice:
17 "Can a person be more righteous than God,
or a man more pure than his Maker?"(q)
18 If God puts no trust in His servants
and He charges His angels with foolishness,[d](r)
19 how much more those who dwell in clay houses,(s)
whose foundation is in the dust,
who are crushed like a moth!
20 They are smashed to pieces from dawn to dusk;
they perish forever while no one notices.(t)
21 Are their tent cords not pulled up?
They die without wisdom.(u)
Matthew 8:1-17
Chapter 8
A Man Cleansed
1 When He came down from the mountain, large crowds(a) followed Him. 2 Right away(b) a man with a serious skin disease came up and knelt before Him,(c) saying, "Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean."
3 Reaching out His hand He touched him, saying, "I am willing; be made clean." Immediately his disease was healed.[a] 4 Then Jesus told him, "See that you don't tell anyone;(d) but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses prescribed, as a testimony to them." (e)
A Centurion's Faith
5 When He entered Capernaum,(f) a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him, 6 "Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible agony!"
7 "I will come and heal him," He told him.
8 "Lord," the centurion replied, "I am not worthy to have You come under my roof. But only say the word, and my servant will be cured.(g) 9 For I too am a man under authority, having soldiers under my command.[b] I say to this one, ‘Go!' and he goes; and to another, ‘Come!' and he comes; and to my slave, ‘Do this!' and he does it."
10 Hearing this, Jesus was amazed and said to those following Him, "I assure you: I have not found anyone in Israel with so great a faith! 11 I tell you that many will come from east and west, and recline at the table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.(h) 12 But the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." (i) 13 Then Jesus told the centurion, "Go. As you have believed,(j) let it be done for you." And his servant was cured that very moment.[c]
Healings at Capernaum
14 When Jesus went into Peter's house,(k) He saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 So He touched her hand, and the fever left her. Then she got up and began to serve Him. 16 When evening came, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. He drove out the spirits(l) with a word and healed all who were sick,(m) 17 so that what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:
He Himself took our weaknesses
and carried our diseases.
