Psalm 113

Praise to the Merciful God

1 Hallelujah!
Give praise, servants of Yahweh;
praise the name of Yahweh.(a)
2 Let the name of Yahweh be praised
both now and forever.(b)
3 From the rising of the sun to its setting,
let the name of Yahweh be praised.(c)

4 Yahweh is exalted above all the nations,(d)
His glory above the heavens.(e)
5 Who is like Yahweh our God—
the One enthroned on high,(f)
6 who stoops down to look
on the heavens and the earth?(g)
7 He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the garbage pile(h)
8 in order to seat them with nobles—
with the nobles of His people.(i)
9 He gives the childless woman a household,
making her the joyful mother of children.(j)
Hallelujah!

Psalm 114

God's Deliverance of Israel

1 When Israel came out of Egypt—
the house of Jacob from a people
who spoke a foreign language(a)
2 Judah became His sanctuary,
Israel, His dominion.(b)

3 The sea looked and fled;(c)
the Jordan turned back.(d)
4 The mountains skipped like rams,
the hills, like lambs.(e)
5 Why was it, sea, that you fled?
Jordan, that you turned back?(f)
6 Mountains, that you skipped like rams?
Hills, like lambs?(g)

7 Tremble, earth, at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the God of Jacob,(h)
8 who turned the rock into a pool of water,
the flint into a spring of water.(i)

Psalm 115

Glory to God Alone

1 Not to us, Yahweh, not to us,
but to Your name give glory
because of Your faithful love, because of Your truth.(a)
2 Why should the nations say,
"Where is their God?"(b)
3 Our God is in heaven
and does whatever He pleases.(c)

4 Their idols are silver and gold,
made by human hands.(d)
5 They have mouths but cannot speak,
eyes, but cannot see.
6 They have ears but cannot hear,
noses, but cannot smell.(e)
7 They have hands but cannot feel,
feet, but cannot walk.(f)
They cannot make a sound with their throats.(g)
8 Those who make them are[a] just like them,
as are all who trust in them.(h)

9 Israel,[b] trust in the Lord !(i)
He is their help and shield.(j)
10 House of Aaron, trust in the Lord !(k)
He is their help and shield.(l)
11 You who fear the Lord , trust in the Lord !(m)
He is their help and shield.
12 The Lord remembers us and will bless us.
He will bless the house of Israel;
He will bless the house of Aaron;(n)
13 He will bless those who fear the Lord
small and great alike.(o)

14 May the Lord add to your numbers,
both yours and your children's.(p)
15 May you be blessed by the Lord ,
the Maker of heaven and earth.(q)
16 The heavens are the Lord 's,[c]
but the earth He has given to the human race.(r)
17 It is not the dead who praise the Lord ,
nor any of those descending into the silence of death.(s)
18 But we will praise the Lord ,
both now and forever.(t)
Hallelujah!

Chapter 3

Anxiety in Athens

1 Therefore, when we could no longer stand it, we thought it was better to be left alone in Athens.(a) 2 And we sent Timothy,(b) our brother and God's coworker[a] in the gospel of Christ,(c) to strengthen and encourage you concerning your faith, 3 so that no one will be shaken by these persecutions. For you yourselves know that we are appointed to[b] this. 4 In fact, when we were with you, we told you previously that we were going to suffer persecution, and as you know, it happened. 5 For this reason, when I could no longer stand it, I also sent him to find out about your faith, fearing that the tempter had tempted you and that our labor might be for nothing.

Encouraged by Timothy

6 But now Timothy has come to us(d) from you and brought us good news about your faith and love and reported that you always have good memories of us, wanting to see us, as we also want to see you.(e) 7 Therefore, brothers, in all our distress and persecution, we were encouraged about you through your faith. 8 For now we live, if you stand firm(f) in the Lord. 9 How can we thank God for you in return for all the joy(g) we experience before our God because of you, 10 as we pray very earnestly night and day to see you face to face(h) and to complete what is lacking in your faith?(i)

Prayer for the Church

11 Now may our God and Father(j) Himself, and our Lord Jesus,(k) direct our way to you. 12 And may the Lord cause you to increase and overflow with love(l) for one another(m) and for everyone, just as we also do for you. 13 May He make your hearts blameless(n) in holiness(o) before our God and Father at the coming(p) of our Lord(q) Jesus with all His saints. Amen.[c]
