Chapter 25

Judah's King Amaziah

1 Amaziah(a) became king when he was 25 years old and reigned 29 years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jehoaddan; she was from Jerusalem. 2 He did what was right in the Lord 's sight but not wholeheartedly.(b)

3 As soon as the kingdom was firmly in his grasp,[a] he executed his servants who had murdered his father the king. 4 However, he did not put their children to death, because—as it is written in the Law, in the book of Moses,(c) where the Lord commanded—"Fathers must not die because of children, and children must not die because of fathers, but each one will die for his own sin."(d)

Amaziah's Campaign against Edom

5 Then Amaziah gathered Judah and assembled them according to ancestral house, according to commanders of thousands, and according to commanders of hundreds. He numbered those 20 years old or more(e) for all Judah and Benjamin. He found there to be 300,000 choice men who could serve in the army, bearing spear and shield.(f) 6 Then for 7,500 pounds[b] of silver he hired 100,000 brave warriors from Israel.

7 However, a man of God(g) came to him and said, "King, do not let Israel's army go with you, for the Lord is not with Israel—all the Ephraimites. 8 But if you go with them, do it! Be strong for battle! But God will make you stumble before the enemy,(h) for God has the power to help(i) or to make one stumble."

9 Then Amaziah said to the man of God, "What should I do about the 7,500 pounds[c] of silver I gave to Israel's division?"

The man of God replied, "The Lord is able to give you much more than this."

10 So Amaziah released the division that came to him from Ephraim to go home. But they got very angry with Judah and returned home in a fierce rage.

11 Amaziah strengthened his position and led his people to the Valley of Salt. He struck down 10,000 Seirites,[d] 12 and the Judahites captured 10,000 alive. They took them to the top of a cliff where they threw them off, and all of them were dashed to pieces.

13 As for the men of the division that Amaziah sent back so they would not go with him into battle, they raided the cities of Judah from Samaria to Beth-horon, struck down 3,000 of their people, and took a great deal of plunder.

14 After Amaziah came from the attack on the Edomites, he brought the gods of the Seirites[e] and set them up as his gods. He worshiped before them and burned incense to them.(j) 15 So the Lord 's anger was against Amaziah, and He sent a prophet to him, who said, "Why have you sought a people's gods that could not deliver their own people from your hand?"(k)

16 While he was still speaking to him, the king asked, "Have we made you the king's counselor? Stop, why should you lose your life?"

So the prophet stopped, but he said, "I know that God intends to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my advice."

Amaziah's War With Israel's King Joash

17 King Amaziah of Judah took counsel(l) and sent word to Jehoash[f] son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, "Come, let us meet face to face."

18 King Jehoash of Israel sent word to King Amaziah of Judah, saying, "The thistle that was in Lebanon sent a message to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son as a wife.' Then a wild animal that was in Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle.(m) 19 You have said, ‘Look, I[g] have defeated Edom,' and you have become overconfident(n) that you will get glory. Now stay at home. Why stir up such trouble so that you fall and Judah with you?"

20 But Amaziah would not listen, for this turn of events was from God in order to hand them over to their enemies because they went after the gods of Edom. 21 So King Jehoash of Israel advanced. He and King Amaziah of Judah faced off at Beth-shemesh in Judah. 22 Judah was routed before Israel, and each fled to his own tent. 23 King Jehoash of Israel captured Judah's King Amaziah son of Joash, son of Jehoahaz,[h](o) at Beth-shemesh. Then Jehoash took him to Jerusalem and broke down 200 yards[i] of Jerusalem's wall from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate.[j](p) 24 He took all the gold, silver, all the utensils that were found with Obed-edom(q) in God's temple, the treasures of the king's palace, and the hostages. Then he returned to Samaria.

Amaziah's Death

25 Judah's King Amaziah(r) son of Joash lived 15 years after the death of Israel's King Jehoash son of Jehoahaz. 26 The rest of the events of Amaziah's reign, from beginning to end, are written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.

27 From the time Amaziah turned from following the Lord , a conspiracy was formed against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish. However, men were sent after him to Lachish, and they put him to death there. 28 They carried him back on horses and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.[k](s)

Psalm 82

A Plea for Righteous Judgment

A psalm of Asaph.(a)

1 God has taken His place in the divine assembly;
He judges among the gods:[a](b)
2 "How long will you judge unjustly
and show partiality to the wicked?(c) Selah
3 Provide justice for the needy and the fatherless;
uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute.(d)
4 Rescue the poor and needy;
save them from the power of the wicked."(e)

5 They do not know or understand;
they wander in darkness.(f)
All the foundations of the earth are shaken.(g)

6 I said, "You are gods;(h)
you are all sons of the Most High.(i)
7 However, you will die like men
and fall like any other ruler."(j)

8 Rise up, God, judge the earth,
for all the nations belong to You.(k)

Chapter 17

Jesus Prays for Himself

1 Jesus spoke these things, looked up to heaven, and said:

Father,
the hour has come.
Glorify Your Son
so that the Son(a) may glorify You, (b)
2 for You gave Him authority
over all flesh; [a](c)
so He may give eternal life (d)
to all You have given Him. (e)
3 This is eternal life:
that they may know You, the only(f) true(g) God,
and the One You have sent(h)—Jesus Christ. (i)
4 I have glorified You on the earth
by completing the work You gave Me to do.
5 Now, Father,(j) glorify Me in Your presence
with that glory(k) I had with You
before the world existed. (l)

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

6 I have revealed Your name (m)
to the men You gave Me(n) from the world. (o)
They were Yours, You gave them to Me, (p)
and they have kept Your word. (q)
7 Now they know that all things
You have given to Me are from You,
8 because the words that You gave Me, (r)
I have given them.
They have received them
and have known for certain
that I came from You. (s)
They have believed that You sent Me.
9 I pray[b] for them.
I am not praying for the world
but for those You have given Me, (t)
because they are Yours.
10 Everything I have is Yours,
and everything You have is Mine, (u)
and I have been glorified in them.
11 I am no longer in the world,
but they are in the world,
and I am coming to You. (v)
Holy(w) Father,
protect[c] them by Your name (x)
that You have given Me,
so that they may be one(y) as We are(z) one.
12 While I was with them,
I was protecting them by Your name
that You have given Me.
I guarded(aa) them and not one of them is lost,
except the son of destruction, [d]
so that the Scripture(ab) may be fulfilled. (ac)
13 Now I am coming to You,
and I speak these things in the world
so that they may have My joy completed in them.
14 I have given them Your word.
The world hated(ad) them
because they are not of the world, (ae)
as I am not of the world. (af)
15 I am not praying
that You take them out of the world
but that You protect them from the evil one. (ag)
16 They are not of the world,
as I am not of the world. (ah)
17 Sanctify [e](ai) them by the truth; (aj)
Your word is truth.
18 As You sent Me into the world, (ak)
I also have sent them into the world.
19 I sanctify Myself for them,
so they also may be sanctified by the truth.

Jesus Prays for All Believers

20 I pray not only for these,
but also for those who believe in Me
through their message.
21 May they all be one, (al)
as You, Father, are in Me and I am in You. (am)
May they also be one[f] in Us,
so the world may believe You sent Me.
22 I have given them the glory(an) You have given Me.
May they be one as We are one.
23 I am in them and You are in Me. (ao)
May they be made completely one,
so the world may know You have sent Me
and have loved(ap) them as You have loved Me. (aq)
24 Father,
I desire those You have given Me
to be with Me where I am. (ar)
Then they will see My glory,
which You have given Me
because You loved Me before the world's foundation.
25 Righteous Father!
The world has not known You.
However, I have known You, (as)
and these have known that You sent Me.
26 I made Your name(at) known to them
and will make it known,
so the love You have loved Me with
may be in them and I may be in them. (au)
