Chapter 33

Judah's King Manasseh

¹ Manasseh was 12 years old^(a) when he became king and reigned 55 years in Jerusalem. ² He did what was evil in the Lord 's sight, imitating the detestable practices of the nations that the Lord had dispossessed before the Israelites.^{(b) 3} He rebuilt the high places that his father Hezekiah had torn down^(c) and reestablished the altars for the Baals. He made Asherah poles, and he worshiped the whole heavenly host and served them. ⁴ He built altars^(d) in the Lord 's temple, where Yahweh had said, "Jerusalem is where My name will remain forever."^{(e) 5} He built altars to the whole heavenly host in both courtyards^(f) of the Lord 's temple. ⁶ He passed his sons through the fire in the Valley of Hinnom.^(g) He practiced witchcraft, divination, and sorcery, and consulted mediums and spiritists.^(h) He did a great deal of evil in the Lord 's sight, provoking Him.

⁷ Manasseh⁽ⁱ⁾ set up a carved image of the idol he had made, in God's temple,^(j) about which God had said to David and his son Solomon, "I will establish My name forever^[a](k) in this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.^{(l) 8} I will never again remove the feet of the Israelites from the land where I stationed your^[b](m) ancestors,⁽ⁿ⁾ if only they will be careful to do all that I have commanded them through Moses—all the law, statutes, and judgments." ⁹ So Manasseh caused Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to stray so that they did worse evil than the nations the Lord had destroyed before the Israelites.

Manasseh's Repentance

¹⁰ The Lord spoke to Manasseh and his people, but they didn't listen.^{(o) 11} So He brought against them the military commanders of the king of Assyria. They captured Manasseh with hooks, bound him with bronze shackles, and took him to Babylon.^{(p) 12} When he was in distress, he sought the favor of Yahweh his God and earnestly humbled himself^(q) before the God of his ancestors. ¹³ He prayed to Him, so He heard his petition and granted his request,^(r) and brought him back to Jerusalem, to his kingdom. So Manasseh came to know that Yahweh is God.^(s)

¹⁴ After this, he built the outer wall of the city of David from west of Gihon^(t) in the valley to the entrance of the Fish Gate;^(u) he brought it around the Ophel,^(v) and he heightened it considerably. He also placed military commanders in all the fortified cities of Judah.

¹⁵ He removed the foreign gods and the idol^(w) from the Lord 's temple, along with all the altars that he had built on the mountain of the Lord 's temple and in Jerusalem, and he threw them outside the city. ¹⁶ He built^[c] the altar of the Lord and offered fellowship and thank offerings on it. Then he told Judah to serve Yahweh, the God of Israel. ¹⁷ However, the people still sacrificed at the high places,^(x) but only to Yahweh their God.

Manasseh's Death

¹⁸ The rest of the events^(y) of Manasseh's reign, along with his prayer^(z) to his God and the words of the seers who spoke to him in the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel, are written in the Records of Israel's Kings. ¹⁹ His prayer and how God granted his request, and all his sin and unfaithfulness and the sites where he built high places and set up Asherah poles and carved images before he humbled himself, they are written in the Records of Hozai. ²⁰ Manasseh rested with his fathers, and he was buried in his own house. His son Amon became king in his place.

Judah's King Amon

²¹ Amon was 22 years old when he became king and reigned two years in Jerusalem. ²² He did what was evil in the Lord 's sight just as his father Manasseh had done.^(aa) Amon sacrificed to all the carved images that his father Manasseh had made, and he served them. ²³ But he did not humble himself before the Lord like his father Manasseh humbled himself;^(ab) instead, Amon increased his guilt.

²⁴ So his servants conspired against him and put him to death^(ac) in his own house. ²⁵ Then the common people^[d] executed all those who conspired against King Amon and made his son Josiah king in his place.

Chapter 21

Jesus' Third Appearance to the Disciples

¹ After this, Jesus revealed^(a) Himself again to His disciples by the Sea of Tiberias.^[a](b) He revealed Himself in this way:

² Simon Peter,^(c) Thomas^(d) (called "Twin"), Nathanael^(e) from Cana of Galilee,^(f) Zebedee's^(g) sons, and two others of His disciples were together.

³ "I'm going fishing," Simon Peter said to them.

"We're coming with you," they told him. They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.^(h)

⁴ When daybreak came, Jesus stood on the shore. However, the disciples did not know it was Jesus.⁽ⁱ⁾

⁵ "Men," ^[b] Jesus called to them, "you don't have any fish, do you?"

"No," they answered.

⁶ "Cast the net on the right side of the boat," He told them, "and you'll find some." So they did,^[c] and they were unable to haul it in because of the large number of fish. ⁷ Therefore the disciple, the one Jesus loved, said to Peter, "It is the Lord!"^(j)

When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tied his outer garment around him^[d] (for he was stripped) and plunged into the sea. ⁸ But since they were not far from land (about 100 yards^[e](k) away), the other disciples came in the boat,^(l) dragging the net full of fish. ⁹ When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish lying on it, and bread.

¹⁰ "Bring some of the fish you've just caught," Jesus told them. ¹¹ So Simon Peter got up and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish—153 of them. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn.^(m)

¹² "Come and have breakfast," Jesus told them. None of the disciples dared ask Him, "Who are You?" because they knew it was the Lord. ¹³ Jesus came, took the bread, and gave it to them. He did the same with the fish.

¹⁴ This was now the third time^[f](n) Jesus appeared^[g](o) to the disciples after He was raised from the dead.

Jesus' Threefold Restoration of Peter

¹⁵ When they had eaten breakfast, Jesus asked Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John,^[h] do you love^[i] Me more than these?"

"Yes, Lord," he said to Him, "You know that I love You."

"Feed^(p) My lambs," ^(q) He told him.

¹⁶ A second time He asked him, "Simon, son of John, do you love^(r) Me?" ^(s)

"Yes, Lord," he said to Him, "You know that I love You."

"Shepherd^(t) My sheep," ^(u) He told him.

¹⁷ He asked him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love^(v) Me?"

Peter was grieved^(w) that He asked him the third time, "Do you love Me?" He said, "Lord, You know everything!^(x) You know that I love You."

"Feed^(y) My sheep," Jesus said. ¹⁸ "I assure you:^(z) When you were young, you would tie your belt and walk wherever you wanted. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will tie you and carry you where you don't want to go." ¹⁹ He said this to signify by what kind of death^(aa) he would glorify God.^[j](ab) After saying this, He told him, "Follow Me!" ^(ac)

Correcting a False Report

²⁰ So Peter turned around and saw the disciple Jesus loved^(ad) following them. That disciple was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and asked, "Lord, who is the one that's going to betray You?"^{(ae) 21} When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord—what about him?"

²² "If I want him to remain until I come," ^(af) Jesus answered, "what is that to you? As for you, follow Me."

²³ So this report^[k] spread to the brothers^[l](ag) that this disciple would not die.^(ah) Yet Jesus did not tell him that he would not die, but, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?"

Epilogue

²⁴ This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.

²⁵ And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which, if they were written one by one, I suppose not even the world itself could contain the books^[m] that would be written.^(ai)
