DAPHNE . A place mentioned in 2Ma 4:33 to which Onias withdrew for refuge, but from which he was decoyed by Andronicus and treacherously slain. It is the mod. Beit el-Mâ (‘House of Waters’) about 5 miles from Antioch. Daphne was famous for its fountains, its temple in honour of Apollo and Diana, its oracle, and its right of asylum.
