(1842-1907) Catholic astronomer, born Skibbereen, Ireland; died London. She studied astronomy at home and in Italy, and in 1877 her first important article, "Copernicus in Italy," was published by the "Edinburgh Review." She won universal renown with "A Popular History of Astronomy in the Nineteenth Century" (1885), which became a standard work, and also wrote "The System of the Stars," "The Herschels and Modern Astronomy," "Problems in Astrophysics," "Modern Cosmogonies," and contributed articles to the Catholic Encyclopedia
