Reigned from March 25, 708 to April 9, 715. Born in Syria; died in Rome, Italy. In 709 he visited Constantinople; it appears that he approved those canons of the Trullan Council which were not opposed to the true Faith and to sound morals. He opposed the Monothelite emperor, Philippicus Bardanes, who deposed Justinian II, and he would have suffered at his hands had not Bardanes been overthrown by Anastasius. The latter, with John, the Patriarch of Constantinople, then made a profession of orthodoxy to the pope. During the pontificate, Saint Egwin, Bishop of Worcester, came to Rome with two Anglo-Saxon kings, Coenred and Offa, and received many privileges for the monastery at Evesham.
