A copy of the Four Gospels in Latin with an interlinear Anglo-Saxon translation or gloss, written c.700,in round characters by Eadfrid, Bishop of Lindisfarne (698-721), ornamented with exquisite tracery and illumination hy Ethelwold (724-740), and enclosed in a jewel-studded metal cover wrought by Bilfrid, the anchorite, over the Latin words, the priest Aldred wrote the Saxon, c950 One of the most beautiful books in the world, it is preserved in the British Museum. Many Lindisfarne words; although not often in the same order or spelling, are found in our versions, e,g., my yoke is sweet and my burden is light (Matthew 11).
