Spanish scholar, poet and critic. Born Santander, Spain, November 3, 1856; died there, May 2, 1912. Educated at the University of Barcelona, he taught literature at the University of Madrid, 1878, and was admitted to the Spanish Academy, 1881. Author of "Estudios criticos sobre poetas Montafienses," and "Heterodoxes Espanoles," a political and literary history of Spain in relation to the Catholic Church, from the time of Priscillian to the end of the 19th century. He collected and criticized the Spanish translations and imitations of Horace and wrote "Historia de las ideas esteticas en Espana," "Las origines de la novela en España," and "Ciencia espanola."
