(1469-1534) Cardinal, philosopher, theologian, and exegete, born Gaeta, Italy; died Rome, Italy. He was of noble birth, and from his youth was devout and studious, entering the Dominican Order before the age of 16. He soon attracted attention by his writings and discourses. Courageously he faced the trying issues of his day, and by tact, education and tolerance, he endeavored to appease the antagonistic, to reform the sinners, to check the spread of heresy, and to avert schism. He is one of the greatest defenders of the Thomistic School. Leo XIII ordered his commentaries to be incorporated with the text of the "Summa" in the official Leonine edition of the complete works of Saint Thomas.
