Lyell, Thomas, D.D.
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
or a Protestant Episcopal clergyman, was born in Virginia in 1775. While quite a young man he became a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church; and during that time was one of the chaplains to Congress. In 1804 he was ordained deacon in the Protestant Episcopal Communion, and became rector of Christ Church, New York city, which position he occupied until his death, March 5, 1848. Dr. Lyell was elected secretary of the convention of the diocese of New York in 1811, which office he continued to hold annually until he declined re-election in 1816. Chosen a deputy to the General Convention in 1818, he was elected successively to the position during twenty-six years. He was a powerful extempore speaker, and a preacher of more than ordinary ability. See Amer. Quar. Church Rev. 1848, page 302.
