French Talmudist of the twelfth century, often quoted by later Talmudists as an important authority. He became well known through his controversy with R. Tam as to whether the tefillin-knot should be renewed every day. A legend arose in connection with this controversy to the effect that Elijah left his grave in order to assert himself once more against R.Tam.
