French Talmudist of the twelfth century, often quoted by later Talmudists as an important authority. He became well known through his controversy with R. Tam as to whether the tefillin-knot should be renewed every day. A legend arose in connection with this controversy to the effect that Elijah left his grave in order to assert himself once more against R.Tam. Elijah is the author of two piyyuá¹im written for the Feast of Weeks, and .
