Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

חִדֶּקֶל [Hiddekel], pr.n. of the river Tigris, Genesis 2:14; Daniel 10:14. Called by the Aramean s דִּגְלָא, ܕܩܶܠܰܬ, Arabic دَجْاَةُ, دِجْاَةُ, Zend. Tegˊer, Pehlev. Tegˊera; whence both the Greek name Tigris, and the Aramean and Arabic forms have arisen. In the Hebrew, ח is prefixed, as is the case in the word חַשְׁמַנִּים and others. [In Thes. the prefix is taken to be חַד active, vehement, rapid; so that this name would be pleonastic: Tegˊer having a similar meaning.]
