שְׁחֵ֫לֶת noun feminine an ingredient of the holy incense, + נָטָף, חֶלְבְּנָה, Exodus 30:34; ᵐ5ᵑ9 ὄνυξ, onyx (whence AV onycha), i.e. unguis odoratus, the operculum, or closing-flap, of certain molluscs, with pungent odour whenburnt, see Thes^1388f. Di Shipley-Cook^{Ency. Bib. ONYCHA}; so most; KG Jacob^{ZMG xliii (1889), 354} proposes amber.

שׁחן (√ of following; compare Arabic be hot, then inflamed; Aramaic שְׁחַן, be warm, heat).

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

שְׁחֵלֶת f. Exodus 30:34 according to Hebrew interpreters, unguis odoratus, prop. the covering or shell of a kind of muscle found in the lakes of India, where the nard grows; which, when burning, emits an odour resembling musk: this is now called blatta byzantina, Teufelsklaue. See Discorid., ii. 10; and the Arabian writers in Bochart (Hieroz. ii. p. 803, seq.). The root is שָׁחַל to peel off, compare שׁיחלא the pod of dates.
